DAY 1, Fri Jan 11 Arrive and transfer to your hotel in the Heliopolis area. Balance of the day at leisure in Cairo: CAIRO

DAY 2, Sat Jan 12 Transfer to the airport for your flight to Luxor. Upon arrival, transfer to board your Nile cruise ship and "hotel" for the next three nights. Sail to the West Bank of the Nile to visit the Necropolis of Thebes, the Colossi of Memnon, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the Valley of the Kings, and the Valley of the Queens. Continue to visit Luxor Temple and the famous Avenue of Sphinxes. This evening, enjoy an optional Sound and Light Show (B, L, D): CRUISE (Luxor)

DAY 3, Sun Jan 13 Today, visit the Karnak Temple complex, the world's largest ancient religious site. Following your visit, rejoin the ship and sail this afternoon to Edfu. Dinner on board this evening (B, L, D): CRUISE (Edfu)

DAY 4, Mon Jan 14 Travel by horse-drawn carriage to visit the 2000-year-old Temple of Horus. Standing as Egypt's best preserved temple and second largest after Karnak, the Temple of Horus is a compelling construction both in terms of size and intricacy. Afterwards, rejoin the ship and sail to Kom Ombo to see the Ptolemaic Temple, built in honor of gods Horus and Sobek. Sail to Aswan. Enjoy dinner on board this evening (B, L, D): CRUISE (Aswan)



DAY 5, Tues Jan 15 After breakfast, disembark and continue to visit the Aswan High Dam, the granite quarries with the unfinished Obelisk, and Philae's Temple of Isis. If time permits, sail by felucca to view Elephantine Island and the Agha Khan Mausoleum. Transfer to the airport for your return flight to Cairo. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel with the remainder of the afternoon at leisure (B): CAIRO

DAY 6, Wed Jan 16 Enjoy a full day at leisure in Cairo, or choose an optional tour to the Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum. Begin with an up-close panoramic view of the Pyramids of Cheops, Khefren, and Mycerinus before continuing to view the Sphinx and the Valley Temple. Conclude the tour with a visit to the world-renowned Egyptian Museum, with its treasures of King Tutankhamen and remains dating back some 3350 years. Lunch is included . This evening, enjoy an optional Sound and Light Show at the Great Pyramid (B): CAIRO

DAY 7, Jan 17 Full day at leisure in Cairo (B): CAIRO

DAY 8, Jan 18 Transfer independently to the airport for your departure flight. CAIRO

How to Geo-Locate Pictures

I spent quite a few hours figuring out how this will be achieved -for those that are interested here is how we are doing it. The Nokia N73 Phones were selected for their quality camera - and will be used for photographs by Aria and Allysha (as well as music and GSM unlocked phones) in addition to 2 Fuji cameras our trusty FinePix Z1 and a newly acquired FinePix Z10fd will be used to capture pictures. Nothing special needs to be done except for ensuring the clocks on all of these devices are synchronized to GPS time - the phones are but the cameras require some work. Next using a GPS receiver which is synced with one of the cell phones we will simply simply start tracking our movement in the morning using a free program from Nokia called Sports Tracker installed on the phones. This program uses the GPS to track speed and distance over time - it was designed as a work-out tracking device but fits our needs as well. Day 77 St. Tropez to Nimes

Wednesday February 20 th Again we woke to glorious weather. On the way out of town we stop for a road map of France. Our next stop is Avignon, a walled city built in the mid 13 th century. I guess the bridge at Avignon is part of a famous nursery rhyme – which none of us had ever heard. We walked around the town and our plan was to eat lunch here and move on. The first place we sat down at was very expensive and was not serving the formulae or set menu since it was already a little after 2pm. We decided to move on and next door we found a set menu. Following lunch we visited the Musee Angladon – a donated private collection from Jaques Doucet (1853-1929). There was a Van Gogh – Railway Cars, works by Picasso, Vegas, Manet. A nice collection – I imagine what it would be lie to be surrounded by such works at my own house. The Picasso piece was my favorite a small painting of a guitar on a chair but I could look at it for ours. The Van Gogh used the natural color of the canvas...

Thoughts on New Zealand

As we depart each country I am going to try to summarize my impressions. New Zealand is a beautiful country with varied features. I have never seen so many shades of green. I can only imagine if it had not been overcast during our entire trip it would be even more striking – especially the coast line. The people we met were not overly friendly, but certainly not rude either. I never heard a New Zealander say thank you, sorry or your welcome. I suppose there are some hints in that fact regarding their attitudes towards life. When I overheard conversations they were often about the economy or politics – we were even asked about our next president. They seem much more world savvy then the typical American. I can see how a true exploration of the country could take months per island – even the travelers we came across seemed to be permanent travelers – they would work for a few months and then travel for a few months – and had been doing that for years – what an interesting lifestyl...
